I am always interested in the new smart home equipment that is coming out so when I saw the Keen Home Smart Vent System I was really intrigued at what it could do. The idea that you could individually control the vents in your home to provide the best comfort was an awesome idea. Who hasn’t complained about one room being too cold but the next room being too hot, and not being able to do a thing about it because they are on the same thermostat. Even when you decided to try to fix the issue, you had to get on a stool to adjust the vent because it is in the ceiling, not ideal.
The great thing about the vents is its compatibility with other systems like SmartThings. I haven’t had the chance to test these out but it is always a good sign when they integrate with other popular systems.
They have a handy little calculator on their website that will help you calculate how many vents you would need. You could also walk around your home and count them and save yourself a lot of work. I have 8 vents on my main floor and they recommended that I get 8 vents, one bridge and one repeater.
This is where the idea of comfort and efficiency fall flat. This is one product that needs to come down in price before it could really take off in an average home. My biggest complaint with a lot of home automation systems and devices is the price. From what they suggested the cost would be almost $700 and this after the discount price they are offering. This is also only my main floor. My second floor has 10 vents. It is going to take a long time to break even on the savings from this system.
I think the product is a really great idea but for me, and I think for most average house owners, the entry point is way to high. According to a lot of the reviews on Amazon, the product doesn’t look ready for prime time.
This will be something that I keep my eye on and hopefully they will find a way to bring the cost down but for now, I will have to pass this system by.
